UK roads see more trucks, fewer cars in 2007
Light vans are the fastest growing category of traffic on UK roads, according the latest figures from the Department for Transport (DfT). Provisional figures comparing 2007 and 2006 indicate that light van traffic was 9% higher, against an increase in HGVs of just 1% and a decrease in cars of 1%. Overall traffic levels fell by 0.9%.
Cars account for 78% of all traffic on the roads light vans 14%, HGVs 6% and other vehicles, 2%. Delays on the slowest journeys got worse, according to the provisional figures, with vehicle delay on the slowest 10% of journeys going up from 3.78 to 4.05 minutes per 10 miles.
