The Road Haulage Executive, trading as British Road Services (BRS), was created as part of a remarkable plan to nationalise transport across the UK.
BRS began to generate its own business as the state run transport system was beginning to suffer.
BRS Truck Rental was launched. The fleet of vehicles, with their distinctive red & blue arrowhead logo, were soon a common sight across the British road network.
With the launch of our Trailer Rental, BRS took its national operating fleet to 1400 trucks and 300 trailers.
The privatisation of many of the UK's publicly owned businesses began. The National Freight Corporation (NFC) was an evolvement of the original Road Haulage Executive, which was transformed into a private company two years earlier. The now called NFCm, under which BRS traded, was fully privatised through a management/employee buy-out.
As the industry boomed, BRS underwent a 'make-over' with a new brand image. The clean white vehicles were retained, but with a new-look 'tyre tread' logo.
BRS continued to play a leading role in the UK transport industry, alongside sister companies Exel Logistics, Lynx & Pickfords.
BRS introduced its first fully computerised operating system providing access to vehicle availability UK wide. This allowed us to better meet our customer's needs.

Volvo bought BRS, in a strategic move to widen its offering in the UK market. BRS benefited from being part of the global Volvo brand, which boasts over a three quarters of a million trucks on the road.
BRS launched Capacity Management – a With Driver solution, with B&Q the first major customer.
Continued major investment in company operating systems began our evolvement towards a more customer focussed organisation. This developed into our current ethos of transport solutions.
BRS's Total Commitment was realised when our 24-7 operational service went live.
BRS re-branded to signal its modern, dynamic and forward thinking customer focus.
BRS's commitment to transparency and confidence in its fleet maintenance and compliance led to the BRS O'Licence Pack. This enables customers to view original compliance documents online.
BRS listened to its customers requesting an online maintenance scheduling and compliance system for their own fleets –they wanted this information on tap. So we created it. Tap.
BRS developed its own bespoke Electronic Proof of Delivery system (ePod.c)
BRS invested in its IT infrastructure to enable more innovative product development through its new mobile platform.
Renault take on financial responsibility for BRS - BRS still remains a wholly owned subsidiary of AB Volvo.
The Company is restructured to reflect the changes, with autonomous operating control and independence of group product – results are now in our own hands. BRS is now even better placed to deliver the full range of Transport Solutions to you.
